Founded in 2004, The Musicology Review is published in association with UCD School of Music. The launch of the Inaugural Edition of The Musicology Review on 8th June 2005 was a momentous event that not only celebrated publications by four staff members, but also marked the last days of the Department of Music as it made the transition to School of Music.
As founders of The Musicology Review, Úna-Frances Clarke and Blathnaid Healy, then final year BMus students served as inaugural editors and continue to guide the development of the yearbook. Although The Musicology Review is distinct in that the initiative originated from students, it could not have been realised without the enthusiastic endorsement of Professor Harry White, and the unreserved support of Dr Julian Horton and Dr Wolfgang Marx, to whom the venture owes much of its continued success.
Whilst the primary aim of The Musicology Review remains its commitment to musicology in UCD School of Music, the scope of the yearbook, much like that of the School itself, continues to expand. Since its inception The Musicology Review has featured a wide range of articles that engage with historical musicology and ethnomusicology; Irish traditional music and film music; philosophical and analytical discourses from Byrd to Shostakovich and beyond. The yearbook now includes a review forum, and is open to contributors from centres of learning across Ireland.
