What are the Different Types of Sound Systems Available for Bands?

Outdoor and indoor systems have different criteria. A basic PA system may require as little as a few horn-type speakers of a few hundred watts capacity. Outdoor systems servicing around 750 people should be about 2KW. A larger system of 150 – 300 watts is preferable for solo performers, duets, trios, and small bands, and will suit most indoor or outdoor events. How Can You Market Your Band?

Digital is the way to go when marketing your band. Whether you opt to use digital marketing agencies or strike out on your own, the internet offers many marketing opportunities. Set up a website that offers information about your band. Develop a mailing list and update it often with news about band appearances and other related events. As your base grows, you can add pictures, tour dates and correspondence with your fans. Consider the design selected for your blog as one that reflects the look and message of your particular band. Your website must be exciting so that your audience will return for more information, and emails can serve as a source for a mailing list.

Social networking is vital and in the US nearly everyone who goes online has a Facebook and/or Instagram account, which will grant you unlimited visibility via the creation of a fan page. Keeping a Twitter account or a Flickr page is a good way to keep updated photos of your band on view.

If you are not a techie, some of the set-ups for these services might tempt you to use an agency, but you can do it on your own if you take the time and effort to learn about these platforms. Ultimately, all the marketing in the world, costly or otherwise, will not keep fans faithful to your database. Only superior music and great gigs can promise that result.

How the Music Industry Works

The music industry is complicated with a lot of fingers in a very big pie.  From artists themselves to the various music distribution channels and record labels all looking to get paid it can make the setup fairly hard to understand.  Add into that how the music industry has changed so much since the internet has had such an impact on how music is sold and distributed, it can be a complicated mess to try and untangle.  Let’s take at how the music industry works.

The Publishing Agent

Most of the publishing agent work under the umbrella of record labels.  That is a significant fact, you need to understand that more than 70% of the Billboard top 100 songs are represented by 4 publishing agencies.  Publishing agencies have enormous client bases and they will sign talent in the hopes that someday they will make it big.  A small minority of their clients provide most of their income and the rest are largely ignored.

Tying it All Together

Music publishers will sign an artist to a contract for three years and represent all of their work, if the relationship works the contract is generally extended one year at a time.   When an artist is signed there can be an advance on future royalties, this sound good in theory but in practice it is a way to get an artist under a contract with a publisher.  The publisher will withhold any earnings until that advance has been paid.  If has not been renewed within the length of the contract then the contract will automatically be renewed.  As an artist you should be very wary of any deal you sign.
